NATE: Empowering Preteens with Nicotine Awareness and Tobacco Education

NATE is one of three youth-focused outreach programs offered by the Community Cancer Center, aimed at promoting nicotine awareness and tobacco education among preteens in Douglas County. The program is tailored to engage students in grades 6–8, providing them with the knowledge and resources needed to make informed, healthy choices.

Program Goals and Design

The NATE program focuses on raising awareness about the risks associated with nicotine use and providing comprehensive tobacco education. Through interactive presentations, students are encouraged to participate actively, ask questions, and engage in discussions about the dangers of tobacco use and addiction.

Key Components of the NATE Program

NATE empowers participants with:

    • Knowledge: Insights into what nicotine is, the health risks it poses, and the various forms of tobacco products.
    • Awareness: Recognition of targeted marketing strategies designed to influence youth.
    • Skills: Tools to overcome peer pressure, manage stress, and communicate effectively.
    • Action: Resources to support informed decisions and advocate for a tobacco-free lifestyle.

Program Outline

    1. Introduction and Media Awareness: Establish touchpoints, introduce participants, and explore media messages targeting youth.
    2. Understanding Tobacco and Nicotine: Define tobacco use, products, reasons for teen usage, and associated health risks.
    3. Addiction and Support Systems: Discuss addiction, cessation strategies, and building a supportive network.
    4. Problem Solving and Stress Management: Explore stress management, peer pressure resilience, and strategies for overcoming negative self-talk.
    5. Youth Ambassadors: Train participants to become peer-to-peer mentors through the NATE Jr. program.

Benefits for Participants

    • Recognize and resist the influence of tobacco marketing.
    • Understand the health risks of nicotine and tobacco use.
    • Develop critical thinking, communication, and team-building skills.
    • Learn techniques to handle peer pressure and resolve conflicts effectively.

Community Impact

The NATE program reflects the Community Cancer Center’s commitment to youth education and community health. By equipping preteens with the tools to advocate for a tobacco-free lifestyle, NATE not only empowers participants but also fosters positive peer influence through the NATE Jr. initiative.

Additionally, program funding supports the purchase of educational materials for classrooms, enhancing learning experiences and strengthening relationships between schools and community organizations.

Together, we are building a healthier, more informed generation equipped to “Be Smart – Don’t Start!”
